Navigating chemical safety in the workplace takes more than a label and a prayer. Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) are the cheat codes every worker needs to avoid turning into a headline. Whether you’re in construction, healthcare, or something in between, knowing how to read and use these bad boys is non-negotiable.
SDSs come with 16 sections because safety shouldn’t be a guessing game.
Key Highlights of SDS Sections:
- Identification: Who made it, what it is, and what to do if it goes rogue.
- Hazard Identification: What can go wrong and how bad it’ll hurt. “Danger” means business.
- Composition: What’s inside and in what amounts. Trade secrets? Yeah, those too.

- Exposure Controls/Personal Protection: PPE, airflow, and anything else that keeps you breathing.
- Physical and Chemical Properties: The look, smell, flashpoint, and all the nerdy details.
- Stability and Reactivity: When might it go boom and why?
- Toxicological Information: Long-term damage and how much is too much.
- Ecological Information: What it does to frogs and fish if you dump it.
- Disposal Considerations: Trash or hazmat? Here’s how to know.
- Transport Information: How to move it without triggering sirens.
- Regulatory Information: The legal fine print that actually matters.
- Other Information: Updates, edits, and extra tea.
Pictograms are the emoji language of chemical safety, and yes, you should care.
Think of these as visual alarms. One look and you should know if it burns, explodes, poisons, or just stinks up your day.
The Nine Pictograms:
- Flame: For the flammables. Keep them far from heat and ego boosts.
- Health hazards: Cancer, fertility issues, or respiratory problems. Not a vibe.
- Exclamation Mark: Less scary but still a threat. Irritants and allergies, watch out.
- Gas Cylinder: Pressurized danger. Boom potential.
- Corrosion: Will melt skin and ruin metal. Stay back.
- Exploding Bomb: If you see this, treat it like TNT.
- Flame Over Circle: Oxidizers love to feed fires. Don’t let them.
- Environment: Save the turtles, store them right.
- Skull and Crossbones: Touch it wrong, and you’re toast. Proceed with caution.
Employers, listen up. You’re on the hook for SDS access and accuracy.
Key Employer Obligations:
- Make SDSs accessible: Don’t make workers beg. Digital or physical, just make sure they can find it.
- Assign a go-to person: Someone needs to keep it updated and train the crew.
- Chase down missing SDSs: Call the supplier and report noncompliance if needed. No ghosting allowed.
If you handle chemicals, SDSs should be your new best friend. Seriously.
Worker Best Practices:
- Read the SDS: Especially if it’s your first time working with that chemical.
- Gear up: Section 8 tells you what PPE to wear. Don’t wing it.
